Are you passionate about eliminating health disparities through research? University of California San Francisco, Division of Prevention Sciences is looking for a Research Interviewer/Recruiter to work on projects related to PrEP adherence and HIV care engagement. This position will conduct data collection and participant recruitment activities for two NIH-funded randomized clinical trials. One trial is investigating PrEP adherence with stimulant-using sexual minority men through smartphone-based Contingency Management and the other is developing and piloting a mobile app for couples in which at least one member is African American/Black and living with HIV. The position’s primary responsibilities will be 1) participant recruitment: implementing online and outreach activities and recruitment strategies, preparing and distributing outreach materials, developing and maintaining referral options for ineligible participants, maintaining the study’s recruitment database, providing recruitment reports to the project team; 2) data collection: conducting phone screenings, scheduling and conducting online consent protocols and survey interviews, arranging phlebotomy visits, maintaining participant databases; 3) participant retention: reminder calls, texts and emails, monthly check-ins, and 4) other duties as assigned by the PI and PD, e.g., attending and participating in team meetings, administration of qualitative control interviews.

Job Summary

Under the direction and supervision of the Principal Investigator (PI) and the Project Director (PD), the position will mainly conduct data collection and participant recruitment activities for a 5-year, 2-site NIH-funded randomized clinical trial to improve PrEP adherence with stimulant-using sexual minority men through smartphone-based Contingency Management. The position’s primary responsibilities will be 1) participant recruitment: implementing online and outreach activities and recruitment strategies, preparing and distributing outreach materials, developing and maintaining referral options for ineligible participants, maintaining the study’s recruitment database, providing recruitment reports to the project team; 2) data collection: conducting phone screenings, scheduling and conducting online consent protocols and survey interviews, arranging phlebotomy visits, maintaining participant databases; 3) participent retention: reminder calls, texts and emails, monthly check-ins, and 4) other duties as assigned by the PI and PD, e.g., performing data entry, cleaning and coding data, attending and participating in team meetings, administration of qualitative control interviews.

  1. Under the direction and supervision of the Principal Investigator (PI) and Clinical Research Coordinator (CRC), the position will mainly conduct participant recruitment activities for a National Institutes of Mental Health (NIMH)-funded randomized clinical trial to develop and pilot a mobile app for couples in which at least one member is African American/Black and living with HIV. Primary responsibilities will include: 1) Participant recruitment: implementing outreach activities and recruitment strategies, preparing and distributing outreach materials, developing and maintaining referral options for ineligible participants, maintaining the study’s recruitment database, providing recruitment reports to the project team; 2) Participant retention: reminder calls, texts and emails, monthly check-ins; 3) Other duties as assigned by the PI and CRC.

This position requires a strict adherence to protocols and guidelines, with an emphasis on organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail. In addition, the successful candidate must possess a warm and nonjudgmental manner, and consistently demonstrate interpersonal tact, discretion, and sensitivity when interacting with study participants. These different job aspects are unique processes requiring specific experience and skill sets, and the Research Interviewer/Recruiter must blend and balance all areas to ensure the successful completion of research data collection and outcomes.

Department Description

The Division of Prevention Science (DPS) is based at the Mission Bay campus at 550 16th Street. The division was established within the Department of Medicine in 1991 and is the administrative home of the Center for AIDS Prevention Studies (CAPS) and the Prevention Research Center (PRC). The division’s research focus is risk behavior and reduction; epidemiology of the virus; evaluation of HIV testing procedures, demographic variables and sexual self-identification; and training for providers who care for HIV AIDS patients. The division is comprised of approximately 46 academics (faculty, specialists, fellows, and visiting professors) and 33 non-academic staff.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Working knowledge and experience (at least 1 year) with data collection activities.
  • Working knowledge and experience (at least 1 year) with participant recruitment activities.
  • Working knowledge of the design and implementation of data collection procedures / protocols.
  • Working knowledge and skills associated with report preparation.
  • Demonstrated proficiency following complex computer protocols
  • Ability to understand priorities in clinical research
  • Demonstrated proficiency with MS Office and Outlook
  • Strong analytical skills required at this level.
  • Ability to accomplish multiple complex tasks under deadline
  • Adept at establishing rapport with participants and eliciting responses for key topics of interest
  • Demonstrated excellent communication (written and oral) and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated record of excellent attendance and reliability
  • Demonstrated ability to handle confidential information
  • Demonstrated ability to deal with a wide variety of people and situations in an effective, courteous, and calm manner
  • The employee must be available to work occasional eves / Saturdays for participant appointments.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of clinical research regulations, including UCSF policies and procedures
  • Demonstrated knowledge of HIV and PrEP issues and terminology
  • Experience working with underserved communities
