Dallas Buyers Club (2013)

This fascinating and highly entertaining film is based on the life of Ron Woodroof, a dishonest, irascible cowboy who discovers he has AIDS and fights the disease, and the system, the only way he knows how—by scamming it. Woodroof created “buyers clubs” that made experimental HIV medications that had no approval from the Food and Drug Administration available to its members, and he arguably saved many lives beyond his own. The film earned Oscars for Matthew McConaughey (Best Actor) and Jared Leto (Best Supporting Actor), who plays Woodroof’s transgender partner in crime.
