The Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria announced Thursday that it will provide India with a $100 million grant to combat HIV/AIDS, the country’s The Mangalorean website reports (mangalorean.com, 12/21).

This new funding brings the charity’s total India award to $492 million since 2005. Since then, the Global Fund has helped provide antiretroviral treatment for 80,000 Indians living with HIV/AIDS. The additional resources will be used to fight stigma throughout India and to train health professionals to better understand and treat those living with the virus.

While funding has also been used to fight tuberculosis and malaria—treating 245,000 TB patients and providing 1.5 million insecticide-treated bed nets—The Mangalorean reports that 80 percent of the funding so far has been used for HIV/AIDS-related programming.
