January 12, 2006—Former President Clinton’s foundation has brokered a deal reducing the costof rapid HIV tests produced by companies in India and China by 50% andthe cost of AIDS meds efavirenz (the U.S. brand is Sustiva) and abacavir (Ziagen) made bycompanies in South Africa and India by approximately 30%. The drugs,while still three times more expensive than the first-line treatmentmost commonly used in developing countries, will offer a much-neededoption for patients resistant to other HIV meds.
