November 11, 2005—The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) yesterday deemed latex condoms highly effective against HIV, gonorrhea, chlamydia and hepatitis B, though less effective against genital herpes, HPV and syphilis. Senator Tom Coburn (R-Okla.), a physician who has previously said that condoms provide false comfort against STDs, called the FDA recommendations “misleading” and the condom information “inaccurate.”
