Monday, July 25, 2005—Just a week after First Lady Laura Bush headlinedthe link between HIV and violence against women during a (for her)unprecedented PWA-whistle-stop trip of Africa, the American Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR) has released a reportslamming the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) fordoing “little” to combat the problem. The study confirms the connectionbetween the high incidence of rape and other sexual abuse and the high rate of HIV among women and girls, especially in the developingworld. Today, in Rio de Janeiro, amfAR tries to kick up internationalinterest in addressing this chronic and critical issue at the year’sbiggest HIV conference, the 3rd Annual International AIDS Societymeeting.
