June 15, 2006—UNAIDS is working with Tanzania, Botswana, Lesotho, Swaziland and Zambia to improve access to circumcision following a study that showed it can reduce a man’s chances of contracting HIV by 60%. Less than 20% of men in southern Africa are circumcised, although some estimate that popularizing the procedure could save 3-4 million lives over the next 20 years.
