India’s National AIDS Control Organization (NACO) wants condom vending machines to be installed at railway stations throughout the country, The Hindustan Times reports (hindustantimes.com, 4/15).

NACO’s proposal follows successful HIV/AIDS awareness programs created by Indian Railways’ government office.  Together with U.N. agencies, NACO and other nongovernmental organizations, Indian Railways has conducted many HIV/AIDS awareness programs, including its Red Ribbon Express, a train that travels across the country spreading HIV/AIDS information.

If Indian Railways agrees to provide free spaces for the condom vending machines, the group will target transport workers who may be at an increased risk of contracting sexually transmitted infections, including HIV.
