In four Indian states this year, the National AIDS Control Organization will boost a pilot project it began in 2007 to include 1.5 million female condoms to be marketed to female sex workers reports the Hindustan Times reports.

“The product will have 100 percent coverage in the four states and is expected to benefit a population of 200,000 sex workers,” said Kavitha Potturi of Hindustan Latex Family Planning Promotion Trust, the nonprofit wing of Hindustan Latex Ltd.,which manufactures the condoms.

According to the article, more than 86 percent of HIV infections in India result from unprotected sex. By providing the female condom, known as FC2 and the only woman-controlled preventative device currently available in the country, the project hopes to reduce sexually transmitted infections.
