Bike Drama

by Esther Kaplan

It looked like an amicable divorce when the San Francisco AIDS Foundation and the LA Gay and Lesbian Center, beneficiaries of the California AIDS Ride, severed their ties with the bike bonanza's for-profit organizer, Pallotta Teamworks, last October, citing Pallotta's high promotional costs and low returns. Pallotta was still planning California AIDS Ride 9 for June with new beneficiaries, while the SFAF and LAGLC were recruiting for their own ride, the AIDS LifeCycle, in May. But now Pallotta is suing the two agencies for "choosing to create a competing event," according to an official statement. "They so totally ignored the provisions in the contract, making such fraudulent use of charity dollars," says SFAF spokesperson Gustavo Suarez. "It's ludicrous for them to now say we broke the contract."
