Nearly $2M in Federal HIV Funds Unspent in Florida
Nearly $2 million of federal funds earmarked for HIV/AIDS care in Florida may have gone unspent in four counties in Orlando, The Orlando Sentinel reports. County officials say the problem may be linked to the complex review process that private businesses must undergo before being awarded contracts. Activists say that the reviews are too cumbersome and possible providers are turned away for no reason. About $1.8 million was unspent during the past five years, leaving people with HIV struggling to get treatment. Although unspent federal funds are not returned—they roll into the following year’s local budget—future funding can be withheld based on leftover money from previous awards. County officials are investigating.
