AIDS Drops Off NYC Top 10 List for Causes of Death
AIDS-related deaths in New York City totaled 609 in 2012, which is the most current data available. In 2011, the total was 766, which ranked the disease at number nine on the list of top causes of death in the city.
The drop has moved AIDS off of the city’s top 10 causes of death list for the first time since the beginning of the HIV epidemic, the New York Daily News reports. Officials attribute the decline to better treatment. However, new HIV cases in the city remain at about 3,000 per year.
