Sounds like a botched study and very little like science to me. Sixty percent of participants were not, in fact, negative? Sorry, no science here.

RW, luckily, it's not that bad. I assume you are getting sixty percent from this statement Of the five participants who had drug resistance, three were found to have been acutely infected when they started the trial, leaving two people who were HIV-negative when they enrolled. However, 5 is the number who had measurement levels of study drug, have HIV, and have drug resistance. The number you are looking for can only be found in the paper itself 18 of 4,747 = 0.4 percent.
