California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a bill into lawThursday that bars health insurers from denying organ transplant coverage to HIVers because of their status. Jon Givner, HIV Project Director at Lambda Legal, testified in front of the California Assembly before that body passed the bill in August, “This groundbreaking law is based on sound science and sets a national standard for protecting the HIV community.” He also pointed out that the law is essential for the one-third of HIVers coinfected with hepatitis C, which can lead to liver failure. It was a good day in Californiafor organ transplant rights, but not so for other issues important to many HIVers. Governor Schwarzenegger vetoed legislation to legalize gay marriage and to raise the minimum wage.
