What do Hugh Hefner, Joycelyn Elders and Ellen DeGeneres have in common? They’re all sex libbers. Along with Judy Blume, Magic Johnson, Anita Hill and Madonna, they were among the top 10 chosen in an online poll sponsored by SIECUS, the Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States, from a list of a 100 who have brought about, through direct action or life circumstance, a positive change in how America thinks and talks about sex.
“The sexual revolution brought sex out of the shadows,” Playboy’s Hefner told POZ. “Now we need to take the propaganda, politics and ‘shalt nots’ out of sex and start celebrating it in a rational, responsible way. Just because AIDS is communicated in part by sex doesn’t make sex the enemy.”
POZ names notably absent from the top 10 include March coverboy Greg Louganis, Betty Dodson, Larry Kramer, Phil Donahue and Miss America 1998 Kate Shindle.
