To my mind developing tolerance and or silencing HIV at the genome level is the only way to functionally cure those infected. Our own genomes are literally littered with viral, retrotransposons, bacterial, horizontal gene transfers and other mobile genomic elements; for the most part they are silenced and are no longer active. Hopefully we can silence HIV too. http://www.sciencemag.org/news/2015/03/humans-may-harbor-more-100-genes-other-organisms.
