To the poster asking what FDA can do to prevent shortages? Hello, don't allow US Pharma cos. to sell to the gray market-which is internet sellers with no license to sell these meds and which sell them without RXs-the major ity of shortages are for benzos like ativan-hard to believe a cheap and generic common drug a hospital could get from India in a week but they can not legally buy on "gray market" so we sit with thumbs up arse and people die of siezure-lack of meds-Medicare pays double Canada!

The FDA is a joke and lacks the moral authority to do anything based on its track record of approving the line of medicament it currently has foisted on depressed patients that are bi-polar which cause diabetes and other life threatening illnesses- I took Seroquel being hawked by my shrink-took on 30 pounds in a month at 50mg lowest dose-felt drugged-worse than an opiod-he had no issue prescribing this high profit drug that gave me diabetes that i now can not shake-but he balks at benzo/rotation

Congress, pushed by the White House, could effectively end drug shortages within the USA by temporarily voiding a pharmaceutical companies patent for the drug if it fails to adequately supply the market. The law would need to interpret what a shortage really is. It would also need to address monetary penalities if the company was found to be negligent in maintaining adequate market supply.

I'm just curious HOW FDA can manage drug shortages? A plant has manufacturing problems--what does FDA do? (What if the plant is in Costa Rica or Puerto Rico?) Send an angry letter? Does the government have facilities to manufacture drugs? Should it perhaps?
