Could be the virus, could be the treatments...
27 year HIV+ and for the last couple of years, a few days a week I will be hit with an awful debilitating bout of fatigue. It is awful. I have no choice but to lay down. I hate it.
I have been taking antiretrovirals for several years and now I can almost 100% sure affirm that I have two types of fatigue: one is the fatigue caused by HIV inside my body and the other one is the one I get from Truvada as a side effect. Although apparently the fatigue is the same, after years of surveying my health I have concluded that Truvada does effectively make me feel fatigued and tired. Truvada is a life saving medicine but it definately has a toll on the body.
Any chance the fatigue is caused by age? Duh. Of course it is. We're aging, it comes with fatigue. Me,I stay busy...if I'm gonna be tired I wanna be tired on my conditions, not those of a virus. I refuse to submit to it's will. I do not live with HIV, it lives with me, and I expect it to behave itself.

Am 66 now and I was infected in 1980. Certainly I feel fatigue often but to conclude that it is caused by the virus or the meds, is presumptuous. Even this study does not convince me; yes the pos were more tired than the neg; but if one considers the level of employment, the % of smokers, and the % of marijuana consumer, which are all very significant, how can one conclude that it is caused by the HIV. Staying active is the best cure for fatigue. Let's not fall into a negative attitude.
