If we're cured we wont need them anymore. Hopefully they will allow us to have better treatment options that are less toxic!

Why not use massive chemotherapy and after washing out the immune system ,they can now infuse the zfn back. I think that will probably lead complete eradication of hidden reservoirs in the body.

To Keith - The Sangamo trials, if successful, *could* create a functional cure that eventually leads to eradication. As far as I know, they are not looking into activation of latent reservoirs... Yet. If all goes according to plan, this cure (and please correct me if I'm wrong) could provide the same optimal results as taking meds (no viral load, good CD4 count, latent resevoirs exist) without actually having to take meds on a regular basis. As far as "when?", your guess is as good as mine.

To Trent - I'm sure many of us agree, we want a cure... Now. Unfortunately, the public sector will only allow economics to move at its own pace, while diverting a few pre-determined grants. I think they will continue to push money toward the most promising programs, but will not move forward with any form of action until phase III is at least nearly completion with encouraging results. The FDA provides control and distribution, not so much creation (arguably). I wish it were different...

To JazJon - Thank you for this article; it's good to see someone pursuing this approach toward eradication. I found it very interesting they they did not include the two key elements that were discovered in the Tim Brown study; irradiation and gene modification. Perhaps this study was more to confirm the efficacy of reintegrating donor marrow from the same individual, after detrimenting the immune system (I don't believe chemo results in complete destruction).

Oh disregard my comment about Chemo not working below. That Chemo fail report was for a DIFFERENT CCR5 study. Results of the still promising study talked about here are due out April 4th. The presentation will be archived on the Sangamo website for two weeks after the event www.sys-con.com/node/2225346
