While well intended, why is the federal recommendation to offer HIV screening the responsibility of Emergency Departments? Isn’t this a public health and preventative health measure? With admitted boarding and the mental health crisis and > 6 hr waits to be seen, EDs are already overwhelmed. It shouldn’t be framed as a failure of the ED that this screening recommendation isn’t able to be accomplished in the public health / primary care environment. Disappointing and misaligned expectations.
