In the long run it is great that we still have research going on to treat HIV and to very occasionally to rid HIV from the body. CRISPR is a good step in that direction. However, as most of us already know for the last 2 DECADES HIV funding is based on research that contains the virus. This is so the pharmaceutical companies can make double profits off of new treatments. Once off of taxpayer money and again off of the exorbitant prices they charge when marketed. Nice system, just bend over boys

Maybe the original infected persons should have been quarantined on an island after all. Yes, it would have been inhuman (and impossible given the science at the time), but we would not be having these conversations now. Ah, to sleep, perchance to dream...

Are we surprised by this? Nope. Nearly 8 billions brains on this planet and not one with the brain power to cure a decades old virus. That's just as frightening as the virus itself. Big Pharma and their investors need the billions of dollars per year for treatment, anyway.

You don't get to write a sobering article reminding people how complex and uncertain a possible cure is one week, another article pronouncing the same possible cure as "not as easy as we'd hoped" the next and still pretend you're not naysaying. We either had something last week, or we've lost nothing now. It's one or the other! And please, don't resurrect this one week of optimism in six years the next time people dare show optimism.
