A man who claims he had a sexual relationship with Orlando shooter Omar Mateen says the killing spree was not motivated by terrorism. Instead, the man claims, Mateen felt rejected and used by gay Latinos and was afraid he had been exposed to HIV.

Speaking in a Univision interview, the man wore a disguise and went by the name “Miguel” because he fears for his life. Univision has not verified Miguel’s story but confirmed that the FBI had met with Miguel.

“[Mateen] adored Latinos, gay Latinos with brown skin—but he felt rejected,” Miguel tells Univision. “He felt used by them. There were moments in the Pulse nightclub that made him feel really bad. Guys used him. That really affected him. I believe this crazy horrible thing he did—that was revenge.”

Miguel said Mateen was particularly upset over a three-way with two Puerto Rican men—one of whom later disclosed that he had HIV.

“[Mateen] was terrified that he was infected,” Miguel told Univision. “I asked him, ‘Did you do a test?’ Yes. He went to the pharmacy and did the test.… It came out negative, but it doesn’t come out right away. It takes four, five months.”

“When I asked him what he was going to do now,” Miguel continued, “his answer was, ‘I’m going to make them pay for what they did to me.’”

On early Sunday morning, June 12, Mateen walked into gay nightclub Pulse—which was hosting a Latino-themed night—and gunned down 49 people, wounding dozens more before being killed by police.

Miguel claims he and Mateen met on the gay dating app Grindr and hooked up 15 to 20 times beginning last fall around Halloween and lasting about two months. Mateen eventually told Miguel that he had a wife and child but said it was an arranged marriage and his wife knew he was gay.

Miguel said he fears for his own life not only because of the massacre’s alleged link with terrorist group ISIS but also because of violent antigay rhetoric Mateen attributed to his own father. Mateen said that if his father found out he was gay, he might forgive his son—if Mateen would kill Miguel. Mateen’s father believes that “gay people are the devil and gay people must die,” Miguel said.

Miguel explained to Univision that he is coming forward with this story because as a U.S. citizen it is his responsibility to help get the truth to the public.

We will see in the upcoming days how the mainstream media report this new information, particularly the HIV angle. The Sun, a newspaper in the United Kingdom, ran with this headline: “Orlando Gunman’s HIV Rampage.”

Other media outlets have reported more uplifting HIV angles, such as “Orlando’s Club Pulse Was Named After a Brother Lost to AIDS.”

Directly after the shooting, CNN ran this story: “Gay Men Outraged Over Continued Ban on Blood Donation.” The headline references the current FDA policy that bans men from donating blood if they have had sex with another man within the past year.

UPDATE: The FBI has confirmed that Mateen was HIV negative, the Los Angeles Times reports.
