"Did AIDS kill NYCO?" It's a lot more likely that crap like the performance you cite, "a Traviata where Violetta, the courtesan with a heart of gold, dies of AIDS," did so. (In that sense perhaps AIDS did kill it, or made a small contribution). People got tired of regietheatre nonsense and voted with their feet, and while perhaps the Met could withstand it financially, apparently NYCO could not. If anything the argument would be that the gay comm. is not large enough to fund opera on its own.
