I have been seeing this for quite some time in New York among my HIV positive friends. Reports of MRSA lesions in or on the gential area and the buttocks are not new among many of my friends. Maybe the scientific community finally figured out something was going on, but the gay community here has known that MRSA was spreading in unusual ways.

What role does meth abuse play? All those I've known to get this infection were meth users.

Tis appears to be a Biased release, Mrsa is spread many ways, mostly off gym and other Equipment we come into contact with. It panders to the Homophobic to vilinise. SF and Boston have Higher Gay pop, and were more likely to hit the Gyms.
