Thank you for your article on co-occurrence of mental health issues with HIV and how substance abuse is a big piece of the puzzle for many of us POZ and the need in receiving comprehensive treatment. I especially found the links to references helpful to better understanding my own multiple diagnoses and reducing some of my own inner negative thoughts. Your article is very helpful and shines light on this topic that is part of many POZ people. All the best to you on your fellowship.
Thank you for this. Here in Toronto, Mount Sinai began an HIV and Mental Health program about 20 years ago. Unfortunately, by my experience, they weren't good with addiction issues. By contrast, ARF, now part of Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, started their Rainbow program in the 80s. The Harm Reduction model was fostered by their recognition of the realities faced by PHAs during those years. If we could get a program specifically for HIV, addiction, and mental health, we'll be set.
Steph, The candour with which you tell your story and the genuine compassion you show for others is truly humbling. It's so imporant to break down the taboos and raise public awareness about the isolation of mental health issues, and your constant time and effort makes a real and valuable contribution. Thank you for being such an eloquent, well-informed and authentic advocate.
Dear Stephen - I am,well lost for words here except to say.Our lives have traveled parallel paths. I am just a bit older and HIV+(for 26years) and challenged my whole 63 years with major depression. In 2010 I created The Walk for Mental Health Awareness - Houston. (it is to become The National Walk for Mental Health Awareness. We are on fb and our web is thehoustonwalk.org. I would like to talk more. Oh, I was also selected 2013 Public Citizen of The Year NASW-Houston Branch. My regards, Patrick

Wonderful! I'm so glad I decided to read POZ today to find this article on you and your work. Dude, I just turned 65, 19 years poz, all my tests are good and non-detecable--but I'm bi-polar also. I have a great care team but I do have freqent dark periods. Thanks so much for what you're doing and I wish you the best dealing with your own issues. Steve, Santa Cruz California

Stephen is my hero breaking ground people don't tread & ignore, speaking OUT about living w/ Bipolar & HIV. As a gay man he challenges us to face facts. Mental health conditions affect People LIVING with HIV/AIDS and LGBT Communitiesâ?? more than general population due to stigma, discrimination, addiction self-medication & death by suicide. Stephen aka Bipolar Bear wakes us up with facts, boldly public to remind, educate & kick butts. He rides, raises funds, enlightens & bears witness. BRAVO!!!
