A British HIV campaign is taking flight across the globe, thanks to its spokesperson, international drag icon Panti Bliss, and its affirmative message about taking charge of your HIV as part of a healthy lifelong journey.

The “My HIV, My Rules, My Journey” campaign features a video starring Panti Bliss (a.k.a. Rory O’Neill), an Irish gay rights activist and entertainer who made international headlines speaking against homophobia and discrimination.

In the video, titled “Flight HIV101,” Bliss plays a traveler aboard HIV Airlines who gets fed up with a bossy flight attendant lecturing passengers about how to live with their HIV. Standing up for herself and her fellow travelers, Bliss announces, “This is our journey, our rules. HIV used to be a short hop, but now it’s a long haul, so let’s make it a healthy and happy one.”

The campaign offers advice on how to age gracefully with HIV. Though some of the specifics may pertain to the health care system in Britain, the main message transcends geographic borders.

O’Neill tested HIV positive in 1995. In a profile last year with The Independent newspaper, the entertainer talked about his own journey with HIV, including the challenges of dating. “A lot of gay guys don’t understand the technical details of being undetectable. I’m in this category for a long time,” he explained. “But most gays are not that [clued in]…they are not doctors, and they are not reading this stuff every day. So a lot of them don’t really understand that. They are vaguely aware.

“But HIV, the word, and AIDS, the word, still has this big fear thing around it. So most guys will be freaked out when you tell them that,” he says, adding that having to disclose his status with each potential partner is “like coming out each time.”
