Ummmmm.... how did people not know this song addressed HIV? Like do people not actually listen to lyrics when they listen to music ????

Guys, this song and video was / is in no way overt about HIV. It's not even a good song. And, yes, it was perfectly possible for anyone - black, white or any other - to have explicitly written and sang about HIV back in the 1990s. TLC obviously kept it under wraps because they weren't brave enough to have put it out there unwrapped. The song wasn't evenly cleverly covert. So, stop claiming otherwise and face up to it.

Lyrics in Waterfalls was clear to the audience it was intended for. The Hip Hop generation understood and could relate to the awareness message. Black entertainers have been involved and engaged in raising awareness about HIV from the beginning of the epidemic, but unfortunately, their stories never made it to the big screen. Maybe POZ can highlight some of those stories throughout 2020.

This is the WHITEST white-splaining I’ve ever read in my life. Why is this a headline? And how out of touch with Black people could this be? It might as well say “did you know Black people talked about HIV in the 90s? Whoda thunk it?”

Who went around watching music videos that closely back then, though? Not many! Who'd have known or realised any HIV link in Waterfalls?! And many of us didn't even see the video at all. You'd need a clue, even today, to see that HIV was a theme of that song and video. I mean, we only knew Bruce Springsteen's Philadelphia was about HIV and AIDS back then because it came from the obviously HIV and AIDS themed movie of the same name. So, don't beat yourself up for missing it!
