Overview

The Accounting Manager oversees or performs all accounting through the Trial Balance on a monthly basis. Specific responsibilities include overseeing Accounts Payable and Payroll, preparing and posting General Ledger entries and contract billing. In addition, this position is responsible for ensuring compliance with multiple government contracts (county, state, and federal), ensuring that accounting is in compliance with both GAAP and the Uniform Guidance (A-133). Other responsibilities include all tasks necessary to running an effective accounting department, such as reconciling balance sheet accounts and bank statements, bank deposits, preparing financial reports for the Finance Committee, the Board of Directors and the Executive Director, assisting the Executive Director with the annual budget, and in generating statements of fund allocations.

Finally, in a non-profit environment, collaboration is key to success. The Accounting Manager often achieves compliance goals through developing strong relationships with program staff, through a shared appreciation for deliverables.

General Information
Accounting

  • Maintain the general ledger
  • Maintain essential accounting records and files
  • Prepares and posts adjusting entries in the general ledger and subsidiary accounts in accordance with accepted standards and Our House policy
  • Maintains the fixed asset ledger
  • Prepares monthly program billings from accounting records
  • Prepares bank deposits
  • Reconcile bank accounts on a monthly basis
  • Reconcile balance sheet and selected revenue and expense accounts monthly
  • Maintain effective system of internal control
  • Prepares annual audit schedules and assists auditors as needed
  • Recommends adoption of improved accounting methods and/or suggests revisions in Our House accounting systems as they are required by changing conditions and/or changes in the law
  • Collaborate with staff throughout the organization, particularly managers and directors, to ensure that they understand all procedures and deadlines, and ensure that their accounting needs are met.
  • Assists the Executive Director with special projects, as needed

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in accounting or a related field (additional years of work experience in accounting can substitute for a degree in the field)
  • Twenty-one (21) semester hour credits in core professional accounting courses
  • Minimum 3 years accounting experience, including at least one year working with government grants. 5 years accounting experience preferred, including 2 years’ experience managing multiple government grants. Prior experience as an accounting manager preferred.
  • Knowledge of the principles, methods, and procedures used in accounting and their application to specific situations
  • Skill analyzing and solving complex accounting problems
  • Experience initiating changes in accounting procedures and records to increase efficiency, effectiveness, and compliance with applicable laws, rules, and regulations
  • Experience preparing complex accounting and other financial reports
  • Intermediate Excel skills required; advanced skills preferred. Proficient with QuickBooks.
  • Experience with compliance and internal control
  • Excellent communication, both for communicating technical information and for building and maintaining effective relationships.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience designing, operating and maintaining a full-scale accounting program
  • Two years’ experience preparing and distributing financial reports to the Board and staff
  • Two years’ experience in nonprofit accounting working with third party payroll contractors such as ADP Workforce Now
  • Experience with an A-133 audit
