The Organization

Brothers United was founded in 1999 to provide supportive, preventive, and social support services to the HIV positive community without charge. The organization’s mission is to enhance the health and wellness of the community, which includes sexual, gender, and racial minorities and the people who live and work in their neighborhoods. Brothers United is the largest African-American AIDS service organization in the state of Indiana, continually ensuring that its clients have a safe and caring environment that allows them to receive all the necessary tools for healthy living.

Brothers United programs and services include:

Care Services

  • Free and confidential HIV testing and STD screening.
  • Comprehensive risk counseling and services such as linkage to care and care coordination including transportation, communication with providers, medication support and a plan for success.
  • Ryan White Services Program which provides wrap-around services such as transportation to medical, dental and psychosocial support for PLWH.

Prevention and Support Services

  • Group level intervention, young adult and adult discussion groups and transgender support services.
  • Programs such as Brothers Facing it Together (B-FIT); 3MV, Many Men Many Voices; CRCS, Comprehensive Risk Counseling Services; Pillow Talk; Sisters United; and Survivors, among others.
  • Substance abuse screenings, counseling, and referrals to intensive outpatient care facilities.

Advocacy

  • Build advocacy networks of African-Americans living with HIV across the State of Indiana through the Positive Organizing Project.
  • Educate clients on the role of planning councils such as the Ryan White Planning Council and the Community Planning Group; encourage clients to join these groups and teach them how to be effective council members.

Recent Accomplishments

  • In 2017 Brothers United received the Indianapolis Legend’s Award from the House/Ballroom Community.
  • In 2017 Brothers United received the Essex Community Partner Award from IUPUI for outstanding contribution to the IUPUI campus.
  • In 2016 Brothers United’s linkage to care program was recognized by NASTAD as the national standard for linkage to care among MSM and is currently featured on NASTAD’s His Health Website.

The Position

The new Executive Director will be the public face of Brothers United and lead the 9-person team. S/he will oversee the organization’s budget and policies; source revenue streams, including from local, state, federal, private, and foundation entities; build strong partnerships/relationships with community leaders, peer organizations, and local and state public health officials; and serve as a strategic link between the Board of Directors and staff regarding the organizational mission, vision and values. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will set the strategic direction for Brothers United, and ensure that the organization achieves its goals.

 

Leadership Outlook and Near-Term Priorities

The Executive Director will plan, direct, and coordinate the activities of Brothers United with an emphasis on HIV/AIDS prevention. The new executive will provide leadership both inside and outside Brothers United, guiding the day-to-day affairs, and continually deepening the organization’s impact. Toward this end, the Executive Director’s 12-18 month priorities include:

  • Implementing efforts to elevate Brothers United’s reputation as the leader in public and sexual health programs and initiatives for multicultural communities in the Midwest.
  • Deepening and/or developing internal systems and external partnerships that ensure a continuum of care for Brothers United clients.
  • Increasing Brothers United’s funding by leveraging current funding relationships and forging new ones.
  • Identifying opportunities to expand programs and services to improve the overall health of the community.
  • Continuing to educate the community, particularly LGBTQ+ youth of color ages 14-25, on their vulnerability to HIV and discrimination.

Key Responsibilities

The Executive Director’s primary responsibilities include (but are not limed to):

  • Program and Service Delivery – Oversee strategic planning, design, promotion, delivery and quality of programs and services.
  • man Resource Management – Effectively manage the human resources of the organization according to established policies and procedures that conform to current state employment regulations. Manage staff leadership and provide professional leadership for the organization.
  • Community and Public Relations – Assure the organization and its mission, programs, and services are consistently presented in a strong, positive image to relevant stakeholders. Develop strong, diverse community partnerships via participation in coalitions, groups, and other networking activities among peer nonprofits and state and local government entities.
  • Fund Development and Grant Management – Lead fundraising planning and implementation, including identifying resource requirements, researching funding sources, writing grants, establishing strategies to approach funders, submitting proposals, and administrating fundraising records and documentation.
  • Board Development and Governance – Actively support board leadership efforts to ensure exemplary organizational governance, board education, maximum board member participation and effective oversight of all Brothers United activities.
  • Networking and Advocacy – Represent Brothers United on the local, state, and national levels and work with the various government entities to secure funding and resources to enhance service and care delivery to client population.

Experience and Attributes

Ideal candidates for this position will share the organization’s commitment to Brothers United’s mission and will bring a variety of experiences, including:

  • Demonstrated commitment to Brothers United’s mission and the community it serves.
  • Experience working with people of color, people living with HIV, transwomen and youth.      
  • Strong organizational leadership skills, professionalism, and exceptional time and task management abilities, including problem solving and interpersonal communication.
  • Knowledge of HIV/AIDS, STD prevention, health and wellness services, and programming.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills. 

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Public Health, Business Administration, Nonprofit Management or other related fields. Master’s Degree preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of business development and/or fundraising experience.
  • Minimum 5 years of management and supervisory experience (with proven success in professional development for direct reports).
  • Minimum 5 years of public health and/or human services program development and management experience.
  • Prior executive leadership experience a plus but not required. 

Salary

The salary for this position is $75,000 – 80,000, including paid vacation, plus up to $200 monthly in reimbursement for health plans.
