According to UNAIDS, HIV-related stigma and discrimination are among the top barriers to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support. Fortunately, people living with HIV in the United States are protected by the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA), which “prohibits discrimination and ensures equal opportunity for persons with disabilities in employment, state and local government services, public accommodations, commercial facilities and transportation.” Unfortunately, it’s not always easy to prove that discrimination has taken place.
