Interesting article, although it is not necessarily HIV speciffic. The cops might have made such phone calls if instead of HIV the man had syphilis, gonnorhea, or some other communicable infection. Of course, just because a person has one of these infections does not mean that the person would be spreading it. Yes, of course this man's confidentiality has been broken. But I wonder if the police would have still made these phone calls had his lawyer learned of their intention to beforehand.

Part deux - to finish off part un: Has the State sanctioned the police making these calls? If so then is this speciffic sanctioning Constitional? But anyway regardless, one might suppose that the confidentiality of the individual here is being seconded to the possible infringement of all that this individual has come into sexual contact with. I am sure that before divulging the man's HIV status the police first enquired into the nature on contact between the phone contact and the man.
