Pacific Pride—an AIDS service organization in Santa Barbara, California, that also provides services for LGBT people—has had to lay off almost half its staff as a result of funding cuts from the state government, the Santa Barbara Independent reports.

Recent funding cuts of $52 million made by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to HIV/AIDS programs throughout California have left Pacific Pride with $600,000 less to operate. As a result, the group laid off 11 people from a staff of 24.

“We’re fighting like hell right now,” said David Selberg, Pacific Pride’s executive director. The budget cuts will also affect Pacific Pride’s anonymous HIV testing program and pantry program, which provides food for people with HIV/AIDS.
