Dr. Sonnabend was also my first 'adult' health care provider beginning in the late 1970s. Long after I moved away from NYC, we stayed in touch and he was always glad to provide assistance for my work in rural HIV education when I moved to Maine, where the attitude was that HIV was not a concern for any rural region. Sigh. We stayed in touch for almost 50 years! May he rest in peace.
RIP Dr. Sonnabend, the first doctor to ever treat me. Such a kind and compassionate man you could ever wish to meet.

Dr Sonnabend, a caring clinician, innovative researcher and a good friend to the new democratic South Africa. I first met him as a Special Advisor in Health in Mandela's Government. He was a close and consistent advisor to us in the battle for affordable medicines to treat HIV/AIDS. I will forever be grateful for his political and scientific contribution and due to his counsel plus guidance from ACT-UP and the Center for Study of Responsive Law - significant progress was made. Thank you Joseph!
