Thanks Aundaray! One correction I have to make-- it was clear how to prevent HIV by the mid-1980s. I remember a public health nurse talking to my 6th grade class in 1987 about using condoms for vaginal and anal sex. She even demonstrated rolling a condom onto a wooden penis to show us. It's important to state the truth and call out those who try to blur history. I'm not saying this in an accusatory manner, but rather in the hope that we can all be honest about the shame that causes some of us to hide behind "no one taught me how to prevent HIV". We need to all forgive people who make mistakes and/or bad choices. Getting HIV is not something tthat anyone need lie about.

Thank you for this piece. I am thankful everday that my partner of 10 yrs has been positive for almost 30yrs and we still have a very active life. I have been positive for 10 (I was diagnosed with him there,I didn't get it from him)He wanted to be there because he told me how terribly alone he was when he was told and he wouldn't have me go through it alone. I am also thankful for all of the brave soldiers (YOU) for paving the way for me to live longer with less side effects. Much love to you!
